The Staten Island Expressway
Travel News today about The biggest changes to hit the Staten Island Expressway since it opened in 1964 will begin in the spring of next year, headed by the addition of fourth lanes to most of the highway between the Verrazano Bridge toll plaza and Bradley Avenue,
where the “Bradley Avenue backup” phenomenon brings traffic to a crawl more often than not.
Other major components of the approximately $140 million project include adding six new entrance and exit ramps, widening four overpasses, realigning a section through Sunnyside to remove the road’s most severe curves, and removing the unused Richmond Parkway overpasses.
When the surgery is completed in 2013, highway engineers expect the expressway to be the efficient, well-designed, driver-friendly roadway we’ve only seen in our dreams.
